The Diabetes-Cancer Link

چکیده

Type 2 diabetes is associated with increased risks for several cancers, including colon,1 postmenopausal breast,2 pancreatic,3 liver,4 endometrial,5 and bladder6 cancers and non-Hodgkins lymphoma.7 Type 2 diabetes is also linked to a modest decrease in the risk for prostate cancer.8 However, diabetes does not reduce aggressive forms, and prostate cancer mortality rates are higher among men with diabetes.9,10 Overall, increased cancer mortality associated with diabetes reflects both increased cancer incidence and decreased survival among people with diabetes who develop cancer.11–13 Research is underway examining how antihyperglycemic medications may affect cancer risk and progression. Some evidence suggests that metformin may decrease risk, and researchers are exploring whether it might even play a role in the treatment of some cancers.14,15

Review Diabetes and Cancer

Diabetes and cancer are common conditions, and their co-diagnosis in the same individual is not infrequent. A link between the two conditions has been postulated for almost 80 years, but only in the past decade has significant epidemiological evidence been amassed to suggest that diabetes and cancer are associated, and the link appears causal. Hyperinsulinaemia, adipocytokines, growth factors a...

Association of Diabetes and Metformin Use with Gastric Cancer: A Case-Control Study

Background and purpose: Recently, several studies have shown type 2 diabetes to be associated with gastric cancer and metformin appears to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between metformin and gastric cancer. Materials and methods: This case-control study included patients with gastric cancer (case group, n= 12...

The Role of Adiponectin in Prostate Cancer: A Narrative Review

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common type of cancer among men over 60 years old. The aggressiveness and mortality of PCa can be correlated with obesity. Adipose tissue-derived cytokines such as adiponectin may explain the correlation between PCa and obesity. Since the correlation between adiponectin and aggressive PCa is still not fully evaluated, we aimed to investigate the probable role o...

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The trend of age-standardized prostate cancer incidence in 1995-2006 in the Taiwanese general population was calculated. A random sample of 1,000,000 subjects covered by the National Health Insurance in 2005 was recruited. A total of 494,630 men for all ages and 204,741 men ≥ 40 ye...

The double trouble of metabolic diseases: the diabetes–cancer link

The recent recognition of the clinical association between type 2 diabetes (T2D) and several types of human cancer has been further highlighted by reports of antidiabetic drugs treating or promoting cancer. At the cellular level, a plethora of molecules operating within distinct signaling pathways suggests cross-talk between the multiple pathways at the interface of the diabetes-cancer link. Ad...
